ABSTRACT: The final report and recommendations of the
Commission on Student Life at San Diego State University
are presented. The commission undertook a comprehensive
review and evaluation of campus programs and services that
contribute to student life. Specific tasks were as follows:
(1) to examine all dynamic aspects of student life at San
Diego State University in terms of expectations, needs, and
program, service effectiveness; and (2) to review and
evaluate the present administrative structure, staffing
patterns, budgets, operations, and program emphases of the
Division of Student Affairs, along with all other
university departments and programs that are involved
direclty with student life. Findings were to be elated to
the following two concerns: whether students are being
effectively served by the university and changes that
should be instituted to ensure an optimal quality of
student life now and into the 1980s. Study areas included:
background; academic environment and student development;
university life, programs, activities, and residential
life; university policy; nontraditional students; student
affirmative action program; international students and
services; general student services; Imperial Valley Campus;
and the Student Affairs Division. Recommendations are
offered in each of these areas. Specific recommendations
for campus information needs for student life planning are
given, including those related to the expansion of the
student population master file. Twenty-six appendices
provide supplementary materials on these topics. (SW)

This is an ERIC database document. ERIC is the National
Education Information Network for providing ready access
to the literature of education -descriptions of exemplary
programs, research and development efforts, and related
information that can be used in developing more effective
educational programs. The ERIC database is currently
available on CD-ROM in the main library (ground floor of
the west wing) at Michigan State University. To locate
ERIC documents in the library identify the first line of
each record (i.e., the field ERIC TITLE NUMBER). ED
following ERIC TITLE NUMBER indicates an ERIC document,
an unpublished research study. Most of these items are
available in the Microforms library, located on the 3rd
floor of the west wing. All you need is the six digit ED
number. If EJ follows ERIC TITLE NUMBER the item is a
journal article. The complete journal name is listed after
the code JOURNAL.
