TITLE: Major School Desegregation Problems: A Status Report.
YEAR PUBLISHED: 1981
NOTE: 14 p.; Paper presented at the symposium on "School
Desegregation Issues Relevant to School Administrators" at
the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research
Association (Los Angeles, CA, April, 1981).
ABSTRACT: Several problems regarding the desegregation
process can be identified. First, the population shift of
urban whites to surrounding suburbs has hindered urban
school desegregation and metropolitan desegregation plans
have proved politically unsuccessful. Second, the number of
black administrators lags far behind the number of black
students. In addition, the product of the desegregation
process, the desegregated school, shows many deficiencies
and is a place where true racial integration has yet to
occur. Solutions to the first two problems include
metropolitan desegregation and meaningful affirmative
action. The teaching profession must act as an effective
advocate of these policies. Resolution of the third problem,
reforming the desegregated school itself, requires a
concerted effort on the part of teachers and administrators
to promote positive interracial experiences. (Author/APM)

This is an ERIC database document. ERIC is the National
Education Information Network for providing ready access
to the literature of education -descriptions of exemplary
programs, research and development efforts, and related
information that can be used in developing more effective
educational programs. The ERIC database is currently
available on CD-ROM in the main library (ground floor of
the west wing) at Michigan State University. To locate
ERIC documents in the library identify the first line of
each record (i.e., the field ERIC TITLE NUMBER). ED
following ERIC TITLE NUMBER indicates an ERIC document,
an unpublished research study. Most of these items are
available in the Microforms library, located on the 3rd
floor of the west wing. All you need is the six digit ED
number. If EJ follows ERIC TITLE NUMBER the item is a
journal article. The complete journal name is listed after
the code JOURNAL.
