ABSTRACT: Discusses the history of black athletic protest,
specifically the Big Ten Athletic Conference protest of
1972, the status of black athletes in recent college
athletic programs, job and social discrimination against
black athletes, and how this discrimination operates
against black students in academic and interpersonal
relationships. Implications for counseling blacks, the
effectiveness of Equal Opportunity Employment and
Affirmative Action programs, and data from a survey of
black athletes in the Big Ten Conference are also examined.
