ABSTRACT: Supports affirmative action to enable disabled
persons to counsel other disabled individuals but suggests
that disability should not be the sole qualification for
counselors. Potential disadvantages to the situation of a
disabled person becoming a counselor are that (1) such
counselors may perpetrate a constricted view of the
lifestyles available to the disabled client, and (2)
disabled persons may choose the career of counseling for
the wrong psychological reasons (e.g., vicarious
satisfaction or status attainment). Disabled would-be
counselors should be subject to the same requirements made
of other would-be counselors. (19 ref) (PsycLIT Database
