ABSTRACT: Applies formulations derived from organization
theory and K. Lewin's (1935, 1948, 1951) concept of the
life space to clarify factors that serve to inhibit women's
progress despite official commitment to equal opportunity.
The organizational perspective is discussed in terms of
university goals and structure. It is shown that the
influence of goal and structural barriers is inherent in
academe and that regardless of intention, the result is a
differential treatment of women that impedes their
professional advancement. Changes in the structure and
procedures of academe and a reevaluation of the roles of
men and women are recommended. It is suggested that a way
to reduce the difficulties that women experience in the
workplace is to encourage broader acceptance of the more
fully differentiated life space as an available option for
both men and women who seek to actively integrate work and
family regions. Recommendations for strengthening
affirmative action programs and mechanisms to more fully
integrate faculty women into university life are proposed.
