TITLE: Research on Multiculturalism in the Curriculum from
a
Canadian Perspective.

YEAR PUBLISHED: 1986
NOTE: 15 p.; Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the
American Educational Research Association (San Francisco,
CA, April 17, 1986).

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to examine selected
writings on the relationship of multiculturalism and school
curricula in Canada. The promulgation of the Canadian
Charter of Rights (1981), the Canadian Constitution (1983),
and the Equality Now program (1984) led to increased
multicultural concerns. The Equality Now program found that
seven percent of the Canadian population are native peoples
and Afro-Asians who believe they are denied equality of
opportunity. Canadian scholars continue to debate the
future focus of multicultural education, raise questions
about its relationship to social justice, and suggest new
methods of empowering the politically and educationally
neglected minority groups. Visible minorities have used the
political process to highlight various institutional
insensitivities to cultural diversity. Additional research
is needed concerning teachers' roles. A list of proposed
multicultural activities for the Secretary of State, the
proposed Ministry of Multiculturalism, the Canadian Council
for Multicultural Education, governments, and school boards
is included, along with a 27-item bibliography. (JHP)

This is an ERIC database document. ERIC is the National
Education Information Network for providing ready access to
the literature of education - descriptions of exemplary
programs, research and development efforts, and related
information that can be used in developing more effective
educational programs. The ERIC database is currently
available on CD-ROM in the main library (ground floor of
the West Wing) at Michigan State University. To locate ERIC
documents in the library: identify the first line of each
record (i.e., the field ERIC TITLE NUMBER). ED following
ERIC TITLE NUMBER indicates an ERIC document, an
unpublished research study.
Most of these items are available in the Micrforms Library,
located on the 3rd floor of the West Wing. All you need is
the six digit ED number.
If EJ follows ERIC TITLE NUMBER the item is a journal
article. The complete journal name islisted after the code
JOURNAL.
To find the call number and location of a journal you may
use the printed JOURNALS INDEXED IN C.I.J.E. located at the
ERIC CD-ROM workstation and at the Cosial Sciences and
Humanities/GovernmentDocuments Reference Desk. You may also
