TITLE: The Current Attack on Women's Rights: A Political
Economic Perspective.
YEAR PUBLISHED: 1982
NOTE: 20 p.; Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the
American Sociological Association (San Francisco, CA,
September, 1982).
ABSTRACT: The right-wing attack on women's rights in the
United States manifests itself in the regulation of
reproductive rights, the family, and the workplace and
corresponds to the changing needs of capital in an era of
social and economic crises. Against this background, anti
abortion legislation, the Family Protection Act, and
discrimination in the workplace are supported by a national
network of power and corporate wealth funded by
industrialists and financiers. Currently, more women are
entering the work force to supplement family income or as
single heads of households. Women remain subjugated,
however, by a bourgeois morality that suggests they are
primarily wives and mothers and secondarily workers; as a
result, low wages for women are legitimized. Until this
bourgeois morality is challenged in the United States, women
will continue to be exploited and capital will retain a free
hand to move them in and out at will. The attack on women is
only a small part of the national network of power and
wealth, however, which also attacks busing, affirmative
action, the graduated income tax, SALT II, and socialized
medicine. (Author/KC)

This is an ERIC database document. ERIC is the National
Education Information Network for providing ready access
to the literature of education -descriptions of exemplary
programs, research and development efforts, and related
information that can be used in developing more effective
educational programs. The ERIC database is currently
available on CD-ROM in the main library (ground floor of
the west wing) at Michigan State University. To locate
ERIC documents in the library identify the first line of
each record (i.e., the field ERIC TITLE NUMBER). ED
following ERIC TITLE NUMBER indicates an ERIC document,
an unpublished research study. Most of these items are
available in the Microforms library, located on the 3rd
floor of the west wing. All you need is the six digit ED
number. If EJ follows ERIC TITLE NUMBER the item is a
journal article. The complete journal name is listed after
the code JOURNAL.
