LEAF TATTER
Symptom: Leaves have jagged, open spaces between their main veins.

Cause: When spring leaf buds are expanding, a sudden frost can kill the whole bud or the tip of the bud. Injured leaves may suddenly turn brown or black a day or two after the frost. When an expanded bud is injured by frost, leaves that emerge have a torn or tattered appearance because portions of the leaf tissue are dead.

Control: There are no practical means of preventing frost damage.
