Citizenship, Leadership & Service

National Citizenship Opportunities

National 4-HMichigan 4-H Youth Development offers opportunities for young people to experience not only state government in action through 4-H Capitol Experience but also to see how the federal government works to make policies that affect our lives as U.S. citizens. Through two programs offered through the National 4-H Council, Michigan young people can experience Washington, D.C., and learn how they can affect decisions both locally and nationally.

American Heritage – Wonders of Washington

In the four-day, American Heritage – Wonders of Washington, summer program, 12- to 14-year-olds and accompanying adult chaperons from Michigan can explore American history through educational field trips, learning games and active discussions. Participants stay at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Trip highlights include Capitol Hill, Arlington National Cemetery, the Smithsonian Institution and other historic sites in Washington, D.C. Each trip may also feature other unique learning opportunities for participants.

For more information on how you can become involved next year, contact the 4-H staff member in your county MSU Extension office. Registrations are accepted beginning in November for the next year’s program.

Citizenship Washington Focus

Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is an innovative and exciting week-long program that gives you a chance to experience the power of our nation’s capital, meet its movers and shakers and discover the citizen within you! You’ll explore government and youth issues through educational field trips, learning games and active discussions. See our government in action and use the resources of the nation’s capital as a base for action back home. CWF gives you a chance to make 4-H friends from across the nation, experience the capital city and go home with the motivation to become one of tomorrow’s leaders!

Who Can Attend? 4-H members aged 15 to 19 and accompanying adult chaperones are invited to register for Citizenship Washington Focus each November for the next year’s program through their county MSU Extension office.
