4-H Shooting SportsHow do I find a shooting sports program?

Check with your county MSU Extension office for available clubs and to express your interest in participating in a shooting sports club.

How do I become a shooting sports instructor?

All 4-H Shooting Sports clubs are supervised by certified 4-H Shooting Sports Instructors (see the 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteer Instructor Job Description for more details). Certification workshops are held throughout the year in various locations in addition to the state training at the Kettunen Center in April. You do not have to attend a certification workshop to help your 4-H shooting sports club — contact your certified instructor through your county MSU Extension office for more details on how you can help.

How can ‘non-certified’ volunteers help out?

Safe shooting sports programs require A LOT of support from adult volunteers. There are many ways to help out — your certified instructor can provide you with additional information. Contact your county MSU Extension office or find a local club in your area and don’t be afraid to ask how you can help!

What ages can youth get involved in Shooting Sports?

4-H Members age 9-19 can participate in the 4-H Shooting Sports program. Cloverbud members have the opportunity to learn about many aspects of shooting sports, including gun safety, eye dominance, hunting tradition, etc. Live fire opportunities only in BB gun and archery are available to Cloverbud members age 7 or 8 at the discretion of a 4-H Certified Instructor with one on one direct adult supervision. Please visit 4-H Shooting Sports State Safety Practices and Policies for more information.

Why do Kettunen Center workshops cost the same as regional workshops even if there more costs involved (food and overnight lodging)?

The 4-H Foundation generously supports 4-H training held at the Kettunen Center, underwriting much of the cost of food and lodging.

How can I get an instructor’s manual?

Instructor manuals are distributed at the 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Training Workshops. This is the only place to obtain an instructor manual. If you have lost your manual contact Dale, Elshoff, 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator (elshoff@msu.edu). 4-H Shooting Sports State Safety Practices and Policies, Instructor Resources and other program information can be found throughout this Web site.
