Cost and How to Apply

How Much Does Camp Cost?

The fee is $285 for campers who are 4-H members and $295 for campers who are not 4-H members. This includes meals, snacks, lodging, a T-shirt, and program and activity fees. Donors to the Michigan 4-H Foundation, Michigan Sea Grant Extension and the Michigan Charter Boat Association generously offset about 40 percent of the real $400-a-camper cost!

A limited number of state scholarships are offered for teens with financial need. Contact your county MSU Extension office to see if local scholarships may also be available.

How To Apply and Remit Payment

Time for ReflectionCamper applications and deposits ($100 for 4-H members; $110 for applicants who are not 4-H members) are due May 1, 2008, to your county MSU Extension Office. Please make the deposit check or money order payable to MSU Extension and note “GLNR Camp deposit” on the memo line. The remaining $185 payment is due by June 20, 2008, along with additional forms that will be sent to you in a camper acceptance letter.

If space is still available after May 1, late enrollments will be accepted with a $25 late fee until camp fills or until June 16, 2008, whichever comes first.

You can download a camper application packet below or pick one up from your county Michigan State University Extension office. The camper application packet includes the Application, Parent/Guardian Consent Form, Code of Conduct Agreement and Policy, Contact Information Release Form, and optional partial scholarship request information.

Counselor applications are due March 14. Six males and six females ages 16 and older will be selected and notified by early April. Counselors attend at no cost. Counselors must arrive to camp early for counselor training which begins on Friday, July 25 at 5 p.m.

Refund and Cancellation Policy

Your deposit will be promptly refunded if you are not selected to attend 4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp. Fees are refundable (minus a $25 handling fee) for campers withdrawing from camp through June 20, 2008. The deposit is not refundable if you withdraw from camp after June 20, 2008.

How Are Campers Chosen?

Space is limited to 70 campers. If you have attended 4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp before, you are eligible to apply again as long as you meet the age requirement mentioned above. Applications are considered based on:

  • Camper gender balance
  • Regional representation
  • The order in which fully completed applications are received
  • First-time or returning camper status (the ideal ratio is 45 first-time applicants to 25 returning campers)
