MSU Extension's Children, Youth and Family Programs offer a broad spectrum of
educational opportunities to meet the needs of people across the life cycle. These
educational opportunities range from video and satellite instruction to one-on-one
teaching delivered by staff and adult and teen volunteers. Training and educational events
for professionals, paraprofessionals, volunteers and young people are featured here.

4-H
Youth Development Training and Events
Each year, Michigan 4-H Youth Development attract more than 8500 youth and volunteers to
state and regional events. Recruiting, training and supporting 4-H volunteers is an
important component in delivering high-quality youth development programs in Michigan. 4-H
also serves as a resource for other youth-serving organizations that are seeking training
and development options for volunteers and professionals who work with young people. In
addition to these opportunities, 4-H hosts several youth development events that expand
the experiences and skills of young people.
Annual
State 4-H Youth Development Events
- 4-H Capitol
Experience
This is an annual 4-day conference for older youth aged 15 and up. The event
focuses on citizenship and public policy education.
- 4-H Communications
Day
This annual event offers communication contests and learning opportunities
for youth ages 9 to 19. Participants can showcase and expand their skills
and knowledge through public speaking, demonstrations, interviews, photography,
art exhibits, media promotion and more.
- 4-H Exploration
Days
This annual youth development conference attracts nearly 3000 participants
(aged 12 and up) to the Michigan State University campus.
- 4-H Animal
Science Events
Designed to provide young people aged 9 and up who are interested in animals
with first-class educational experiences on the campus of Michigan State University
and other program sites.
- Great Lakes
and Natural Resources Camp
This weeklong camp offers young people aged 13 to 15 experiences in natural
resources education and management to increase their awareness, appreciation
and understanding of Michigan's natural resources.
Regional,
National and International
4-H Youth Development Events
- National 4-H Center
The National 4-H Council offers a
variety of national learning opportunities for young people. Many of those opportunities
involve staying at the National 4-H Center, a 12-acre suburban campus just one mile from
Washington, D.C. In addition to 4-H events offered by National 4-H Council, any youth
group can use the facilities and learning tour services.
- International Exchange
Opportunities
4-H offers opportunities for young people and families to serve as both host families for
international exchange students and as youth ambassadors to other countries.
- National Citizenship
Opportunities
Michigan 4-H Youth Development offer opportunities for young people to see how the federal
government works to make policies that affect our lives as U.S. citizens through two
programs offered through the National 4-H Council, Citizenship Washington Focus and
Wonders of Washington.
State
4-H Volunteer Training and Youth Development Events
All state 4-H volunteer training coordinated by state 4-H staff members and
State 4-H Programming Committees falls into one of these four formats:

Most state 4-H Volunteer Training and Youth Development events take place
in one of these four (4) locations:
- Kettunen Center
Kettunen Center is the state 4-H leadership training center. It is located
in Tustin, Michigan near Cadillac and features 160 acres of forests and wetlands
on the shore of Center Lake.
- Kellogg Biological Station
Kellogg Biological Station is a 4,065-acre Michigan State University research,
education and Extension facility in southwestern lower Michigan. It
is on the eastern shore of Gull Lake, 12 miles northwest of Battle Creek and
15 miles northeast of Kalamazoo.
- MSU
The campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing boasts 5,198 acres
of park, forest, research and teaching facilities located just east of Lansing,
Michigan's capital.
- Tollgate Conference
Center
Tollgate Conference Center is located at Tollgate Farm, a 240-acre retreat
northwest of 12 Mile Rd. This Michigan State University facility is
an hour or less drive from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Detroit, Flint, Ann
Arbor and Lansing, and minutes from Interstate 96.

- MSU Extension Calendar
MSU Extension offers professional development training in a variety of subjects.
This site displays events for the current month and allows visitors to search
for events in a specific program area.
- Natural
Helpers
Training is available for school professionals interested in implementing
a peer-helping program in their communities. The program is designed to address
issues faced by middle and high school students. Contact Cathy Newkirk at
