Ives Road Fen Preserve
(near Tecumseh, Michigan)
The Nature Conservancy is looking for volunteers to assist
with restoration efforts at Ives Road Fen Preserve near Tecumseh.
Depending on the weather, volunteers will remove invasive plants, collect
native plant seeds, or stack brush piles.
A typical workday includes an introductory talk and a tour
of the fen led by our stewardship staff, where volunteers usually see rare
and beautiful plants and animals, such as Blanchard's cricket frog, and
prairie-Indian plantain (Cacalia plantaginea). The work is both
exciting and rewarding; giving volunteers an opportunity to have a very
visible and significant impact on one of Michigan's natural jewels.
Interested individuals should contact Andrea Strach
(astrach@tnc.org or 517- 316-2280)
for Saturday workdays or Kari Kirschbaum
(kkirschbaum@tnc.org or 517-
927-4694) for weekdays.

Seven Southeast Michigan
State Parks and Recreation Areas
Are
you interested in...
-
learning more about the landscape around you?
-
helping restore natural areas in state parks and recreation areas?
-
working with a team of folks who share your love of nature?
Then don't miss this
great new opportunity!
The State Park Stewardship Unit is looking for core volunteer stewards to
restore and maintain fragile, native ecosystems in seven Southeast
Michigan parks and recreation areas. Key areas have been identified as
high priorities for ecological restoration in:
Algonac
State Park,
Bald
Mountain,
Brighton,
Highland,
Island
Lake, Pinckney,
and Waterloo
Recreation Areas.
We are looking for dedicated volunteers to form teams and make an extended
commitment to restore these natural areas in our state parks and
recreation areas. Steward groups will learn how to restore fens, dry sand
prairies, oak barrens, lakeplain prairies, and others.
To kick off this program, we are holding a series of workdays. Give us a
hand at these workdays and get a feel for the different activities Core
Volunteer Stewards perform. Times and locations are listed at our website
www.michigan.gov/dnrvolunteers; click on the Core Volunteer Steward
link under Current Volunteer Opportunities. Hope you can join us!
