Oakland MG's
Planting at the Detroit Zoo

Pictured are 8 Oakland County Master Gardener Candidates, as they worked on Sylvia Shult's adopt-a-garden at The Detroit Zoo on 5/8 & 5/15.  Our main objective was to make a butterfly shaped garden out of impatiens and get the garden looking good.

We moved 2 end loaders of compost and soil into the main garden area to create a slant for the butterfly.  I created the design on graph paper and the ladies followed the directions, using wooden skewers to make the outline.  Nine flats of impatiens were used to create the butterfly.  Two end loaders of wood chips were used around the garden and well as around the butterfly.

All total, the Master Gardener Candidates put in 65 hours of work in the garden.  It looks beautiful, and many people are surprised when they see the butterfly.
