Plant No. 21

Posted October 5, 2005

I am a resident of Shiawassee County and I have a yard that I help my neighbor out with.  Every year we have trouble in this one yard.  You can zoom in on these pictures and see more closely the plant we are now having a problem with.  It keeps growing up in her lawn.  There is a main cluster of these plants in her other neighbor's yard.

I believe this is a wild leek. I have them growing in my yard. I transplanted them here from some property I owned in Montclam county.

Wild leeks (Allium tricoccum), also known as ramps, are a member of the onion family (Alliaceae). Both the white root and the broad green leaves are edible. They are found from the U.S. state of South Carolina to Canada and are especially popular in the US state of West Virginia when they emerge in the springtime. A common description of the flavor is like a combination of onions and strong garlic.
