This
Mystery plant grew in my mother’s yard last year in
Westland, MI. Can anyone identify it?

Well.....as best able to make
out from the picture and size being relevant to the finger
in the picture....I'd have to say Malva sylvestris,
noting the dark red veins, on pink or lavender flowers,
common name High Mallow.
It does resemble cheeses or common
mallow, but appears to have an upright habit, not
creeping.
Malva sylvestris can grow 1-3 ft
high, leaves are "broad and crinkly, five lobed, ivy
like..." It's bloom time would be June - August.
