Plant No. 6

Posted May 17, 2004

This plant is growing in several spots in my perennial beds...and even popping up in the lawn. I'm about 45 minutes north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Zone 4b). The beds where it's growing are in sun for most of the day. The flowers are about 3/4" and are white, splashed with purple, with a hint of yellow in the center. The leaves are about 1" long and are shiny and solid green. It looks like it might be related to pansies or violets, but I'm not sure.

1 - Maybe Viola sororia  'Freckles' - Leena form California

2 - I believe it is Viola sororia 'Freckles' - Rosemarie in Imperial Beach, CA

3 - The violets are probably a Northern White Violet Viola pallens

4 - Looks like Viola septentrionalis "Northern blue violet" blooms in hues of blue but sometimes white - John Rice Monroe County

5 - This plant is either a "Sweet White Violet" (Viola blanda) or "Canada Violet" (Viola canadensis)....both are wildflowers & have similar flowers. I found them in the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers, Eastern Region. We also have them at our hunting camp in the UP of Michigan. Hope this helps.

6 - Viola canadensis
