Plant No. 1

Posted November 12, 2003

This is some type of strange plant that began to grow rather rapidly under some spruce trees. I did not notice any blooms but they are nice looking plants which could serve as a ground cover. Submitted by Louise Riggs, Jackson County

- The main clue is this sentence - " This is some type of strange plant that began to grow rather rapidly under some spruce tree." I would be interested to know what her yard looks like today! I suspect what she has is the beginning of Dog-strangling Vine..... or its cousin. These are some of the nastiest invasive plants to show up in the midwest in recent times. Check the TNC invasives site for more horror stories. As a milkweed, its seeds blow in the wind for a great distance and germinate easily. Black swallow-wort has been accurately named.
