Macomb County Garden Walk Tour May 17th 2004 at Rich & Judy Dugger's in
Romeo, in Photo is Diane Grantham Master Gardener in front of the Summer
Cottage.
This garden is in the Historical District of Romeo and usually featured
on the Romeo Library Walk. The Garden begins with the front berm; it is
shaped with various ground covers and heath, graced by a cherub
sculpture for the focal point.
Walking to the back yard through a tree shaded lot, you will see Hostas,
fern, vinca, a small pond, all adding interest to the garden. Follow the
flagstone steps to the garden area and delight in the array of
perennials and colorful splashes of annuals along the borders. The
quaint screened in summer cottage, originally a chicken coop, was
transformed by Mr. Manahan in 1941 to a little hideaway complete with a
brick grill.
The Dugger's added a picket fence in the front yard of the cottage. Judy
and Rich strive to achieve the peaceful subdued and relaxed feeling of
their favorite style
English
Cottage
Gardens.
To enjoy the garden from any corner, there are benches, a glider and an
arbor covered with Dutchman’s pipe. . . . A
Garden
of
Love. |

On July 10th 2004 Deb Kellogg's said: "When touring my garden enjoy the
surroundings of lilies, roses, Hostas, perennials, annuals and pathways
taking you to quaint sitting areas. Creation of the garden was started
about 5 years ago and is constantly changing. When we moved into the
Shelby area the yard was nothing but grass and overgrown bushes. The
yard needed color and structure. Now when you walk through the yard you
see Victorian gazing balls, fairies, frogs and an explosion of summer
color and fragrance."

Macomb County Master Gardeners at the Clinton River Gardens of Sue Conti
in Clinton Twp on July 14th 2004 M G Sue Conti says: "We moved in to
this area in 1981, the only growing things in the expansive yard were
grass, a few pine trees’ two large maple trees, and one flowering crab
apple tree. In the years since then we have planted, replanted, and
transplanted perennials, trees shrubs and flowering shrubs. Our goal was
to make the yard pleasant for us, but also inviting for the birds and
butterflies abounding in the adjacent woods year around. We do have lots
of deer and he is out there munching this winter, hope he finds other
food by spring time. Come and see what is left and spend the morning or
afternoon and enjoy with us the flowers, birds and butterflies,
refreshments will be served." |

July 14th at Carolyn Taylor's in Clinton Twp July 14th 2004
Looking at flowers, and trinkets and enjoying the company of other
gardeners, Carolyn likes lots of things to look at with my flowers.
"I've got birdhouses, watering cans and anything that catches my eye. I
also have a vegetable garden. This year the grass area in the back is
shrinking more. Maybe a couple swipes with the lawnmower will be all
I'll need. I'll be making my chocolate pound cake and orange lemonade.
Come over I will enjoy the company." |

Macomb County Garden Tour Romeo - June 30th 2004 |

Linda is taking a picture, with Pat Meixell and Zoe looking on |
Andrea's
Garden is well planned with many points of interest. As you enter
the Rose Garden, you will see five different color groupings of
roses. The many trees and shrubs give this garden a wonderful
enclosed woodland feeling. Most breathtaking is the perennial garden
with a "Dry River Bed" and bridge. You will see many unusual
perennials that offer beautiful color accents through out the
garden. Also tucked in a shady corner is a Fern Garden with many
varieties of ferns and woodland plants, a pond and a sign with a
special quote you must read Most all plants are labeled so bring
pencil and paper, you will want to take notes. Andrea has a unique
way of creating mystery with all her curves and turns as you wind
your way down to the Gazebo that she has designed, at the end of the
garden path. It is a long drive to the country but well worth the
trip.
