Macomb Master
Gardeners and a Garden Club together on Sunday Aug 18th 2002 had a
joint adventure attending these two Farms side by side on 22 mile rd in
Macomb Twp. with new homes and a Nursery surrounding them Janet
Eschenburg and Pat Schmeiser MG 1999.
They each have an acre of land and many types of gardens. Pat is
more a “City Gardener “with wonderful plantings right out of Better
Homes and Gardens. Color abounds around their restored and added on to
traditional farm house. The yard features a beautiful landscaped pond,
and ancient mulberry tree surrounded by a splash of color in the middle
of a circular driveway, and great foundation plantings. There is a
large vegetable garden too. And there is a very special piece of turf to
be asked about ( I asked, but did not find out).
One
of the Gardeners side by side is more of a “Country
Gardener” While the property includes a perennial garden, herb
garden shade gardens, and foundation plantings (as well as a vegetable
garden) Janet is more inclined to find a plant she loves and
then tries to find a spot for it. So you may find herbs or even
vegetables in the perennial garden and hollyhocks in the herb bed. And
the vegetable garden always includes rows of annuals herbs, everlasting,
and flowers for cutting. Wonderful old trees shade the brick patio where
they served punch and goodies ( herbal of course!) The men did
like seeing all the antique tractors.

birdhouses along with stained glass patio stones and butterfly houses .
You will see lots of container gardening with the Red Grass called
pennisetum rubrum that Linda has wintered over in her basement. Flowers,

The
History . . . of Walnut Grove Farms
While
founded in 1990, Ron and Karen Zemens didn't start building flowerbeds
until November 1999. It was all we could think of to do for our exchange
student, Sonja Wolf, who was from Wiesbaden Germany, You see her dad
Werner died unexpectedly that late November. Sonja was staying at our
house as part of a student exchange program. Five days after her dad's
funeral, Sonja came back to us to complete her senior year at Richmond
High School. Not knowing how to handle the situation, we did the only
thing that came naturally to us- gardening. . . . . .

We
walked and some of us were treated to a ride between the Walnut
trees and enjoyed more than 50 island beds. Hundreds
of perennials, grasses, shrubs, trees, herbs, annuals, vegetables and
even a pumpkin patch. Featuring
the “Crown of Thorns” garden with a display of various roses and
Hawthorne
trees leading to a special garden
message. These gardens are
growing and continuously changing every year.
They are very natural and informal.
Special message stones placed throughout the gardens to create a
positive atmosphere. Gazing
balls and birdhouses and feeders add interest.
More than 180 Gardeners came in the two days that this garden was opened
during the Richmond Good Old Days The
walk is over 1,000 feet long, covering over 10 acres of former farm
land. We raised Black Angus cows for beef production for years, but now
we only have a couple of cows (bulls). Instead, we are landscaping
the place to create a private park for our family. In the Photo are Doug
Sharon and Craig Busch of C & S Gardens in Armada. other photo is
Pat Cencek, Lucille Day, Karen and Ron Zemens and Geri Carick.
