In Macomb County on September the 10th, Master Gardeners, Joanne Huey, Genia Topski, Paul Abrahamson and Kim Podaseck hosted the garden walk at the Martha T. Berry Gardens a Medical Care Facility, They have been working all summer with the residents and staff beautifying the court yard project. They elicited support from local businesses, acquaintances and other county departments for the plants, soil, fountains, garden art, etc. to enhance the garden and flower beds. The MSU- Master Gardeners worked in collaboration with the Boy Scout Troop #1489 who built the raised flower beds. Also shown in picture is Sandra Richards and Gloria Goeddeke, Lucille Day with the camera taking pictures of the other Camera Man. In the photos you will notice what a great job these few Master Gardeners have done in one season.

Garden Walk on September 12th at
Martha Nitz '99  of Washington Twp

mac_018_17.jpg (42075 bytes)

Description:  A Prairie garden-in-progress in its third summer after construction. The focus is on wildlife habitat using native Michigan plants as much as possible to bring back the pre-European settlement oak/hickory "openings" found in this corner of Macomb County.  So far they have worked on a mini-woodland, a woodland-edge meadow, native shrub borders, and a not-quite-native lake plain prairie front yard.

You will be able to see the effects of invasive aliens such as European bittersweet on our native wild cherry trees, and you may find autumn olive sprouts in spite of four years of eradication attempts. Martha says she is learning as she goes, with the help of family, lots of books, the Wildflower Association of Michigan, the Macomb Conservation District, Wild Ones, and, of course, Master Gardeners.

In photos are Kathy Apley '99,  Pat Cemcek '00,  Lucille Day, Martha Nitz, Kim Ackerman and Julie.

mac_018_171.jpg (55383 bytes) The photos are of many Master Gardeners - Kathy Apley '99, Pat Cencek '00, Anni Cischke, Henrietta Karwowicz, Lucille Day '96, Betty & Gary Pieper '96, Bill & Mary Forsyth '99, Ralph & Trudy '92, Gregory Shirley '96, & Dan Moore, Martha Nitz, and Ann Hupfel.

We walked under the rose arbor in to the backyard and enjoyed the "Silver Garden" that is accented with many colors of blue, lavender and pinks. The yard is lined with more than 65 spruce, fir, and pines. The berm is covered with peony bushes armeria, and two weeping mulberry Trees. There is also a "secret garden" carpeted with natural plush fiber. We found lots of seating areas through out the yard.
