On Thursday July 20th the Shelby Twp. Garden Club hosted their annual Garden Walk with about 7 Gardens in the area.

mac006_3a.jpg (60187 bytes) Master Gardener, Lucille Day,  was helping out at the Garden of Martin and Lydia Kamensky. About 600 people attended throughout the day.

mac009_6a.jpg (41108 bytes) Martin posing with some of his daylilies, in fact about a acre of them, what a sight. Martin also has many unusual varieties of perennials, and Lydia is the Vegetable Gardener.

One of the Mystery Plants was a Voodoo Lily that has been growing for 10 years. Martin has created a little micro climate for it which is similar to conditions in zone 10. There are always surprises in every garden. mac007_4a3.jpg (62757 bytes)mac012_9a.jpg (31600 bytes)

Jo Sova's Garden

mac005_2a.jpg (51043 bytes) The first day of August brought the Macomb County Master Gardeners to Jo Sova's Garden in Ray Twp, at the north end of Macomb County.

It was a rainy day, but by mid afternoon, out came the sun and we were treated to a walk in Gala Gardens.  Shown in the picture is Jo Sova Showing off her unique sign and again posing under the Wisteria, that Jo has trained up a pole to look like a tree.

The pergola in center yard was made by husband Al. Jo has canna's that stay in the ground year after year in her own microclimate she has created. We especially enjoyed the soothing sound from the new pond the Sova's added this year.

About GALA GARDENS  Jo says: " We have a continual progression of plants, grasses and vegetables. Perennials abound with a touch of annuals for some added interest. We have added, changed and evolved over a 11 year period and are still working to improve each year".

Pat Wise Garden

mac006_3a1.jpg (57064 bytes) Master Gardener from the class of '97 Pat Wise of Clinton Twp. Macomb County was host for the Garden Walk on August 2nd.

This small garden features two Arbors one with Passion Vine. As you enter through a Moon Arched Garden Gate covered with roses, you follow the stone path to view, shade perennials under the oak tree. Beyond this shade area, is now a sunny area, new to this garden (neighbors took out 15 large Austrian pines that were 30 years old). Lots of instant sun and the loss of much privacy.  Lucille was sitting in the shade looking at the many gazing balls in the garden.

Anni's garden features 2 ponds, a bridge, and Anni's house all built by husband Al. Entrance to the yard is marked with a split rail fence bordered with lots of choice flowers and plants. There are birms in front with a swing and weeping Larch tree.

Hosta beds designed by Anni and lots of varieties to look at since Al and Anni have included surprises at every turn. There is lots to see including many hanging baskets and annuals. I just can not describe it all.
