Congratulations to Genesee County Master Gardener, Jerry Redoutey, who
was selected as “Senior Citizen of the Year” in the Service
Category by the State of Michigan’s Department of Community Health,
Office of Services to the
Monday, August 27, 2001. Lt. Governor Dick Posthumus and several other
dignitaries made the presentation.
Genesee Master Gardener, Mary Kaye Smeltzer, president of the Open
Gate Garden Club in Fenton, nominated Jerry, and he was supported by
the Michigan State University Extension - Genesee County, Easter Seals
of Genesee County, St. John Catholic Church in Fenton, Transplantation
Society of Michigan, and the Michigan Eye Bank Ambassador
Program.
In addition to all of the volunteer hours he gives to these
organizations, Jerry volunteers for MSU at the Ag Expo on campus as
well as being a volunteer docent at the MSU Horticulture gardens, and
additionally in Genesee County for the Boy Scout and Girl Scout
organizations, Genesys Hospice, Whaley Children's Home, Ruth Mott
Learning Garden and Greenhouse, and various programs with Genesee
County Community Mental Health.
What an honor for a very special person - a tireless advocate and
energetic teacher!
