2000 MAEA ANNUAL MEETING

October 10, 2000

The meeting was called to order by President Varner at 5:15 p.m. in the Big Ten C of Kellogg Center.

Secretary’s Report

Moved by Lindquist, supported by Dudek to dispense with the reading of the minutes of the August 24 Board Meeting and approve minutes as presented. Motion approved.

Treasurer’s Report

Briccault reported that $5,000. has been set aside from the treasury for the Wisconsin meeting. He reported that we have 138 members which includes 21 new members. The balance sheet and cash flow report was discussed and the budget from October, 2000 to September 30, 2001 was distributed. Briccault also reported that Paul Marks has audited the financial records for MAEA for the period of October 1, 1998 through September 30, 2000 and found the records to be in good order, with appropriate documentation of transactions during the audited period. Moved by Score, seconded by Staton to accept the treasurer’s report. Motion approved.

Nominating Committee

Briccault gave the report of the Nominating Committee, which consisted of himself and Staton. Nominees included Mark Longstroth, President. No further nominations for President from the floor. Stan Moore was nominated as President-Elect. No further nominees for President-Elect from the floor. Candidates for the position of Vice-President were Craig Burns and Jerry Lindquist with no further nominations from the floor. Don Smucker was nominated as Secretary with no other nominations from the floor and Paul Wylie as Treasurer with no other nominations from the floor. Moved by Norman to accept this slate of officers, support Betz, motion passed. Ballots were distributed and voting was carried out.

MAEA Bucks

Varner explained that the Association was making available a coupon for $6. that can be redeemed for Extension merchandise that will be paid out of the MAEA treasury. Members were encouraged to use these coupons at Extension school.

Proposed Mentoring Guidelines

The proposed MAEA New Agent Mentoring Guidelines were discussed by Tom Dudek. This effort was initiated by Paul Marks and a committee developed the guidelines which have been made available on the website. It was explained that it was the intent of the guidelines to try to help all new agents to be successful. The guidelines were discussed, including the role of the CED in the process and the question was raised of who should pick up the cost for mentoring traveling to county of the new agent. Varner stated that it is up to us if we are going to make a new system happen. Moved by Nugent to approve the new mentoring guidelines. Support: Lindquist. Motion carried.

Election Result

Briccault announced the election results as follows:

President-Elect Stan Moore
Vice-President Jerry Lindquist
Secretary        Don Smucker
Treasurer        Paul Wylie

Moved by Dudek, support Silva to destroy the ballots. Motion carried.

Varner reminded members that dues are $60. and that Briccault has new statements which will be passed out and these are due December 15 of this year. The dues statement is also available and can be printed off of the web site.

Meeting was suspended for dinner.

Introduction of Guests

Varner introduced guests present: Dr. Arlen Leholm, Gale Arendt, Dr. Scott Loveridge, Dr. Larry Hamm, Sally Stuby and Tom Emling. New members were introduced by respective Regional Directors and they were presented with plaques of the NACAA Code of Ethics.

President’s Report

A report was given by President Varner thanking the Association for the opportunities that were made available to him by being able to serve as President. He reported that the project of orientation packets for new members to be presented to them their first day on the job is progressing.

Committee Opportunities

Longstroth and Varner explained the opportunities available on the three National Committees and encouraged members to consider applying for these vacancies.

NACAA Award Winners

Jim Kalishek recognized the NACAA Award Winners. Several were presented plaques and certificates. The National Winners had already received their plaques and certificates at the National Meeting. Winners were as follows:
Individual Newsletter: Bill Robb – National Winner
Publication: Dale Mutch – National Winner
Feature Story: Phil Durst – National Finalist
Team Newsletter: Phil Durst – Regional Finalist
Presentation/Slide Set: Ned Birkey, Regional Finalist
Direct Mail Piece: Roberta Lawrence, Regional Finalist
Learning Module/Notebook: Mark Seamon, Regional Finalist

President’s Citation

Recognized with a President’s Citation were Phil Durst, Dave Glenn, Kara Griffith, Tim Johnson and Julie Pioch.

Outstanding Support Staff awards went to Shiela Morgan, Administrative Assistant for the Northern Regional Office; Chris Defouw, MSU Extension Budget Group on Campus and Jerry Skeltis, Farm Manager of Clarksville Experiment Station.

Specialist Awards – President Varner recognized Jim Hilker, Ag Econ and Allen Jones, Plant Pathology with Outstanding Specialist Awards

Spring Inservice

Stan Moore shared plans for the Spring In-Service. Ira Krupp will chair and the meeting will be scheduled during Spring Break. Administration continues to support this activity financially.

NACCA National Meeting

Longstroth and Moore discussed the National Meeting for 2001 which will be held in Albuquerque from August 5 to 9, 2001. They reminded "first-timers" that they can receive a grant to attend, up to their fifth year of employment.

Officer Installation/President’s Plaque

Lawrence conducted the Installation Ceremony for the new MAEA officers.

President’s Plaque – Varner presented a President’s Plaque to the new President, Mark Longstroth.

Meeting adjourned to Regional Meetings conducted by Regional Directors.
