Miscanthus floridulis--Giant Chinese Silver Grass
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 9
Height: 12 ft Spread 5 ft
Type: herbaceous perennial
Flowers: White
Comments: This very large grass is considered by some
experts to be one the largest perennials. Its large size
would indicate a suitable growing area would be at the back
of the perennial border. The flowers start as red clusters,
mature to white and then dry and persist into winter. This
sturdy plant withstands wind and can be used in coastal
areas where salt spray is a problem. Provide a growing area
in full sun or partial shade and with a moist soil.
Propagation: Seed, or division in the spring.
Cultivars:
'Colzam' (Colossal TM) - A vigorous plant reaching a
height of 10 feet.
References for Cultivars: Lake County Nursery 1999.
