Elaeagnus pungens--Thorny Silverberry
Hardiness Zones: 6 to 9
Height: 12 ft Spread: 12 ft Form: irregular
Type: broad-leaved evergreen
Annual Growth Rate: more than 18 inches
Flowers: White
Fruit: Red
Comments: Thorny Silverberry is a fast growing, irregular
shrub that will require frequent pruning. It tolerates
adverse sites and can be used in shade. The flowers are
quite fragrant. The red fruits are speckled with silver
scales. The branches have thorns that can reach a length
of 3 inches. The large size, tendency to sucker, thorns
and need for frequent pruning do not commend this shrub to
the average landscape.
Cultivars:
'Fruitlandii' - Larger, silvery leaves.
