Arctostaphylos uva-ursi--Bearberry

Comments: Bearberry can be a suitable ground cover for
dry, sandy soils. Best growth occurs in acid soils. The
evergreen foliage becomes bronzed in winter. The white
flowers are tinged with pink and are produced in the
spring. The 1/4 inch fruit (Vis. 1) become effective in mid
to late summer persist into winter.

Cultivars:
'Massachusetts' - The leaves are smaller (Vis. 2) than
the species and reported to have some disease
resistance.
'Point Reyes' - The leaves are thick, dense and darker
green than the species.
'Vancouver Jade' - The dark green foliage turns dark
red in the fall. Reported as resistant to leaf spot.
'Wood's Compact' - A low-growing form only 3 inches
tall but spreading to 4 feet. The red fruit persist
through winter.
