Pine Bark Adelgid
The pine bark adelgid (Vis. 1) infests the stems of white,
Scotch and Austrian pine. The white waxy filaments produced
by large numbers of the insect make the bark look as though
it had been sprayed with something.
Light infestations cause little injury. Heavy
infestations can cause stunting. The insects excrete
honeydew. This sticky fluid can be used as a substrate by
a black mold called sooty mold. The sooty mold causes no
harm unless it blocks sunlight on the needles and reduces
photosynthesis.
