Pine Needle Scale
These white scales (Vis. 1) can be a serious problem on
pines.
The insects overwinter as eggs beneath the female scales.
The eggs hatch in May or June and the reddish colored
crawlers migrate to other parts of the plants.
The insects suck juices from the needles and can build up
to very large numbers before being noticed. As the
infestation increases the foliage yellows and the branch
may die.
Overwintering stages can be controlled with dormant spray.
