Gall mites
This family of microscopic mites includes a large number
of tree and shrub pests. Homeowners rarely identify the
causal organism because these mites are too small to see
with the naked eye (less than 0.5 mm). Diagnoses are
usually based on the damage symptoms, which are often
distinctive. The most common types of damage are leaf
spindle galls (Vis. 1), leaf bladder galls and leaf erineum
patches. A few other species may cause rusting symptoms
or distorted leaves or buds.
