Ulmus americana--American Elm
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9
Height: 70 ft Spread: 40 ft Form: vase
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Comments: American Elm has been decimated by the usually
fatal Dutch Elm Disease. If the tree is grown, one of the
disease resistant cultivars should be tried, however these
are resistant, not immune. The species was favored for
use as a street tree because of its vase-shaped habit that
provided a high canopy in urban areas. In addition to
Dutch Elm Disease, Wetwood will also be a problem.
Cultivars:
'Delaware #2' - Listed by Princeton Nurseries as being
highly resistant to Dutch Elm Disease (Vis. 1).
'Princeton' - (Vis. 2) A cultivar selected for its form
that has proven to be somewhat resistant to Dutch Elm
Disease.
'Washington' - Another resistant cultivar with glossy
green leaves.
