Sorbus aucuparia--European Mountain Ash

Hardiness Zones: 3 to 6
Height: 30 ft Spread: 20 ft Form: oval
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Flowers: white
Fruit: orange

Comments: European Mountain Ash has a rapid growth rate at
first but slows down with age. The tree has no particular
soil preference and is susceptible to several serious
pests. Scales, mountain ash sawfly, scab, cankers and
borers weaken the tree with attacks of fire blight usually
fatal. The white flowers appear in the spring after the
leaves. The fruits are orange-red but cultivars have
fruits of other colors. The fall color is red.

Cultivars:
'Black Hawk' - A narrow tree with foliage that
reportedly resists sun scald. Orange (Vis. 1) fruits.
'Fastigiata' - A slow-growing, upright type with good
fruit production.
'Michred' (Cardinal Royal TM) - A Michigan State
University selection (Vis. 2) that produces red rather
(Vis. 3) than orange berries.
'Pendula' - A weeping growth habit.
'Rossica' - An upright cultivar (Vis. 4) that produces
red fruits.
