Schizophragma hydrangeoides--Japanese Hydrangea Vine
Hardiness Zones: 5 to 8
Height: 30 ft Spread: 25 ft
Type: deciduous vine
Flowers: White
Comments: This climbing plant (Vis. 2) can reach 30 to 40
feet. The sterile flowers in the flower cluster have showy
white bracts (Vis. 3). Roots produced on the stems attach
the plant firmly to supports. The soil should be moist,
however, the light exposure can be sun to shade. The plant
is often confused with Hydrangea petiolaris. Pruning should
be minimal and done in winter. Best success should result
from container grown plants set out in the spring.
Cultivars:
'Brookside' - A selection with very small leaves.
'Moonlight' - The bluish green leaves (Vis. 1) have green
veins.
'Platt Dwarf' - Smaller than the species.
