Ornamental Plants plus Version 3.0 - 00001254
11/12/99
Ricinus communis--Castor Bean
Height: 6 ft Spacing: 36 in
Type: annual
Comments: Castor Bean grows to a large size in a short
time and makes a good temporary screen. The (Vis. 1) large
leaves give the plant a very coarse texture. The largest
plants develop from seed started early inside. Castor Bean
likes a deep, rich soil, sheltered from winds. The seeds
(Vis. 2) are both attractive and poisonous so should be kept
away from children. Cultivars are available that have
purple leaves.
Propagation: The seed can be started outside in the
garden. Plant them two to three inches apart and one and
one half inches deep. Firm the soil over the seed which
germinates in three to four weeks at 65 to 70 degrees.
Soaking the seeds, in water, overnight, before planting,
may enhance germination.
