Rhododendrons - Hardy species and hybrids
'Aglo' - (Mezitt Hybrid) Bright pink flowers with
rusty-red throats. Becomes a 4-foot tall mound but
does grow larger. Provide full sun and an annual
Shearing. Blooms about a week later than P.J.M.,
Zone 4.
'America' - (Yaku Hybrid) - Pink flowers are produced
on a compact plant, Zone 6.
'Anah Kruschke' - A heat tolerant plant with dark
purple flowers, Zone 5.
'Anna H. Hall' - (David Leach Hybrid) - The buds are pink
but open to white flowers. A compact and dense
plant, Zone 6.
'Anna Rose Whitney' - Rose pink flowers with brown
spotting, Zone 6.
'April Reign' - Double, slightly fragrant flowers are
pink with lighter centers, Zone 4.
'April Rose' - The flowers are double, red and slightly
fragrant. The foliage is reddish bronze in the fall,
Zone 4.
'April Snow' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - A dense, upright plant
producing double, pure white flowers, Zone 5.
'April Song' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - Large, light pink
flowers have nearly white inner petals and are
produced on a wide-growing plant, Zone 5.
'April White' - Pure white, semi-double flowers

'Baden-Baden' - Vigorous, sun tolerant plant having a

'Balta' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - A slow growing, compact
plant that produce pale pink flower buds opening to
nearly white flowers. The flowers will be pinker in
the shade and whitest in the sun, Zone 5.
'Bernstein' - Yellowish orange flowers each with a
bright orange blotch, Zone 5.
'Besse Howells' - (Shammarello Hybrid) - Ruffled red
flowers are produced on a compact plant, Zone 6.
'Big Deal' - A compact plant produces ivory flowers,
Zone 5.
'Big Red' - Large clusters of red flowers are produced
on a wide and upright plant. The foliage is large
and dark green. Best flowering occurs in filtered
sun, Zone 5.
'Black Satin' - (P.J.M. Hybrid) - The flowers are light
violet-purple. The winter foliage color is satiny
black, Zone 5.
'Blue Baron' - A compact, mounded plant that produces
flowers that are almost blue. Winter protection is
suggested, Zone6.
'Blue Diamond' - An early bloomer producing small, blue
flowers, mound-like plant, Zone 6.
'Blue Peter' - Bluish-purple flowers marked with
purple, Zone 5.
'Boule de Neige' - Pale pink buds open to white
flowers. Compact when young but becoming rounded with
age, vigorous and easily grown, Zone 5.
'Bow Bells' - The light pink flowers are darker pink on
the reverse side, a slow grower only 3 feet tall,
Zone 6.
'Burma' - (David Leach Hybrid) - Bright red flowers, Zone
4.
canadense - (Rhodora) - Deciduous, native plant
suitable for use in moist, shaded areas in cool
climates. The plant grows 3 feet tall and produces
lavender pink flowers, Zone 2.
canadense var. albiflorum - Deciduous native species
suitable for use in moist, shaded areas in cool
climates. The plant grows 3 feet tall and produces
white flowers, Zone 2.
'Canary Island' - (David Leach Hybrid) - Yellow
flowers, Zone 5.
carolinianum var. album - Pale pink flower buds open to
very pale pink to white flowers, Zone 5
'Caronella' - (Shrimp Pink Hybrid) -The pink flowers
have darker pink fringes. Most of the foliage falls
in autumn but turns orange yellow and red before
doing so. A vigorous, upright, 5 foot tall plant,
Zone 5.
'Cary's Red' - Red flowers, similar to 'America', Zone
5.
catawbiense - (Catawba Rhododendron) - The flowers will
be in shades of lavender but will vary if plants are
grown from seed, Zone 4.
catawbiense 'Album' - White flowers (Vis. 3) are produced
in large clusters on vigorous and wide plants, Zone 5.
catawbiense 'Album Elegans' - An upright plant
producing flowers (Vis. 2) that open mauve and then
fade to white, Zone 5.
catawbiense 'Album Novum' - The white flowers are
tinted with rose and have greenish-yellow spots, Zone
6.
catawbiense 'America' - Compact clusters of dark red
flowers, Zone 4.
catawbiense 'Amphion' ('F. L. Ames') - Large pink
flowers have white centers, the leaves are unusually
glossy, Zone 5.
catawbiense 'Boursault' - A wide plant that produces
lilac colored flowers (Vis. 4), Zone 5.

deep, rose colored flowers, Zone 4.
catawbiense 'Lee's Dark Purple' - An old cultivar with
purple flowers each with brownish spots, Zone 5.
catawbiense 'Lodestar' ('Swans Down') - The flowers
open pale lilac and then fade to white and are
spotted with greenish yellow, Zone 5.
catawbiense 'Nova Zembla' - Dark red (Vis. 7) flowers
with an even darker center, Zone 5.
catawbiense 'Party Pink' - Light pink flowers become
darker at the edges, Zone 5.
catawbiense 'Powell Glass' - A wide, upright, vigorous
plant that produces white flowers, Zone 5.
catawbiense 'President Lincoln' - A hardy cultivar with

6.
'County of York' ('Catalode') - This wide plant
produces large white flowers that have a pale green
throat, Zone 6.
'Crete' - Rose colored buds open to pale purple flowers
each with brown spots, Zone 5.
'Crimson Tide' - Red flowers each with a darker red
spot, Zone 5.
'Cunningham's Blush' - Pale pink flowers with a light
pink blotch, 4 feet tall and 6 feet wide, Zone 5.
'Cunningham's White' - The pink buds open to white
flowers each with a pale yellow center, best in
partial shade, Zone 5
'Daphnoides' - Clusters of purple flowers on 4 to 6
foot tall shrubs, Zone 5.
dauricum var. album - A slow growing plant producing
early, pure white flowers, Zone 5.
dauricum var. sempervirens - The lavender flowers are
produced in early spring. The dark green leaves
persist through the winter, Zone 6.
'Desmit' - A slow growing, compact plant. A ten year
old plant will spread about 3 feet and be 1 foot
tall. The pink flowers are produced in small
clusters, Zone 5.
'Dora Ameteis' - White flowers with yellow throats will
be produced on plants that will be twice as wide as
high, Zone 6.
'Dorothy Swift' - Pale pink to white flowers. A slow-
growing plant that will be wider than high, Zone 6.
'Edmond Amateis' - (David Leach Hybrid) - White flowers
with a red blotch, Zone 6.
'Elite' - (P.J.M. Hybrid) - The latest P.J.M. to
flower. It bears pinkish lavender flowers, Zone 4.
'Elizabeth' - A 3 foot tall mound producing red
flowers, Zone 6.
'Elvira' - (Marjatta Hybrid) - Grows only 2 feet tall and
has red flowers. Zone 4.
'Fiesta' - Pink and white flowers on a compact plant,
Zone 6.
'Fiji' - Red buds open to rose, Zone 5.
'Francesca' - (Dexter Hybrid) - Dark red flowers are
produced in large clusters. A vigorous and upright
plant, Zone 5.
'Fred G. Peste' - A low, 3-foot plant with red flowers,
Zone 4.
'Gertrude Saxe' - Pink flowers are borne in large
clusters. Most foliage is retained in winter, Zone
5.
'Gold Crown' - Lemon yellow flowers spotted with red,
Zone 5.
'Golden Gala' - (David Leach Hybrid) - Ivory colored
flowers are produced on a well-branched plant, Zone
5.
'Gomer Waterer' - Pink buds open to white flowers, 6
foot shrub, Zone 5.
'Haaga' - (Marjatta Hybrid) - Plants about 6 feet tall
produce pink flowers. Cold tolerant, Zone 4.
'Helikki' - (Marjatta Hybrid) - Reddish-violet flowers
are produced on cold tolerant, 6-foot plants, Zone 4.
'Henrietta Sargent' - Rounded plants, about 6 feet tall
and wide, produce deep pink flowers, Zone 4.
'Henry's Red' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - Unusual dark red
flowers have an even darker throat. Grows best in
full sun or light shade, Zone 4.
'Hong Kong' - (David Leach Hybrid) - Primrose yellow
flowers, Zone 4.
'Hudson Bay' - White flowers are produced in small
clusters, Zone 5.
impeditum (Cloudland Rhododendron) - A small,
evergreen, dwarf shrub bearing purple flowers, Zone
5.
'Jane Abbott' (Abbott hybrid) - Deciduous, large, pink
flowers, fragrant, Zone 4.
'Janet Blair' - (Dexter Hybrid) - The large clusters of
flowers consist of frilled, light pink flowers each
with a golden eye. A plant that is wider than tall,
Zone 5.
'Jean Marie de Montague' (The Honorable Jean Marie de
Montague) - Bright red flowers, best when given some
shade, Zone 6.
'Jericho' - (David Leach Hybrid) - Yellow flowers on
plants 3 feet tall but twice as wide, Zone 5.
'June Pink' - Pink flowers on plants that will be wider
than they are tall, Zone 5.
x laetivirens - A low-growing, mounded plant that
prefers filtered sun. Rather inconspicuous, rose-
colored, tubular flowers, Zone 6.
'Landmark' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - Dark pink flowers are
almost red, Zone 5.
'Laurie' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - A slow-growing plant
reaching a height and spread of about 3 feet after 10
years. The flowers are white to light pink, Zone 5.
'Lavender Frost' - Double, light lavender flowers, Zone
5.
'Lavender Queen' - (Shammarello Hybrid) - A compact
plant with small lavender flowers having ruffled
petals, Zone 5.
'Legacy' - Robust plants produce double, dark purple
flowers, Zone 5.
'Little Olga' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - A sport of 'Olga
Mezitt' that is smaller and grows more slowly.
'Llenroc' - (Shrimp Pink Hybrid) - Light pink flowers
with a yellowish center, Zone 5.
'Lord Roberts' - Red flowers with a darker blotch, Zone
5.
'Lunar' - Bright pink flowers, Zone 5.
'Lynne Robbins Steinman' - The pink flowers are double
and have yellowish centers, Zone 5.
'Mary Kittel' - A very compact plant reaching a height
of 18 inches and a spread of 3 feet in 12 years. The
flowers are dark pink, Zone 5.
maximum - (Rosebay Rhododendron) - A fast-growing
species that grows well in shade. The flowers are
small and white to pale pink (Vis. 10), Zone 4.
maximum var. roseum - A wide plant that produces pink
blossoms after most rhododendron have finished
flowering, Zone 5.
micranthum - An Asian species with white flowers and very
small leaves, Zone 5.
'Midnight Ruby' - The dark purple flowers have a red
eye. The foliage turn dark purple to almost black in
winter, Zone 5.
'Mikkeli' - A cold hardy cultivar reaching a height and
spread of 6 feet and producing white flowers, Zone 4.
'Milestone' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - The dark pink flowers
appear to be nearly red when viewed from a distance.
This compact, twiggy plant produces red and yellow
fall color on interior leaves. A ten year old plant
has a height and spread of about 3 feet, Zone 5.
'Minnetonka' - Semi-dwarf plants produce lavender-pink
flowers.
'Mist Maiden' - Dark pin buds open to pink flowers,
compact plants 3 feet tall and wide, Zone 5.
'Molly Ann' - This 5-foot tall plant produces dark red
flowers that become more rosy red as the mature, Zone
6.
'Molly Fordham' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - A ten year old
plant is 4 feet high and 3 feet wide. The flowers
are small, white, and cluster of them nearly cover
the plant when it blooms. In shaded areas or in cold
weather the flowers will be pinkish, Zone 5.
'Montchanin' - (Guy Nearing Hybrid) - A vigorous plant
that produces white flowers borne in clusters at the
branch tips. The leaves are very small, Zone 5.
'Moonstone' - Creamy yellow flowers on a compact, 3-
foot plant, Zone 5.
'Mrs. J. A. Withington III' - Double, lavender flowers
are produced on a wide and upright plant, Zone 5.
muconulatum - Deciduous, 6 foot tall plant bearing
flowers in shades of pale lavender. The fall foliage
display is often colorful, Zone 5.
'Nantucket' - A robust, upright plant that produces
bright pink flowers, Zone 5.
'New Patriot' - The dark pink flowers appear to be red
from a distance but can be damaged by late spring
frosts, Zone 5
'Northern Starburst' - Rounded plants have a height and
spread of 5 feet and produce pink flowers, Zone 4.
'Olga Mezitt' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - The plant covers
itself with clear pink flowers (Vis. 11) in the spring.
Young plants should be sheared annually and given a
sunny location, Zone 4.
'Orange Honey' - An open plant that produces salmon-
pink flowers, Zone 5.
'Paula' - A compact plant producing mauve buds that
open to golden-pink flowers, Zone 6.
'Pauline Bralit' - The white flowers are produced on
vigorous plants, Zone 6.
'Peach Blend' - A nearly deciduous plant that produces
early pink flowers each with a yellowish center, Zone
6.
'Percy Wiseman' - Peach pink flowers, Zone 4.
'Peter Tigerstedt' - (Marjatta Hybrid) - Cold tolerant

'Racelina' - An upright, slow growing plant that

racemosum - A small plant bearing tiny, pink flowers,

'Ramapo' - (Guy Nearing Hybrid) - A low, rounded,
mound-shaped plant that produces violet colored
flowers (Vis. 14). The foliage is light green when
young but turns bronzed in winter, Zone 5.
'Red Quest' - A compact, rounded plant producing red

'Redder Yet' - Red flowers, Zone 4.
'Regal' - (P.J.M. Hybrid) - Lavender pink flowers are
produced between the flowering times of 'Victor' and
'Elite', Zone 4.
'Rocket' - (Shammarello Hybrid) - The coral pink
flowers are frilled and blotched with red, Zone 6.
'Rosamundii' - Light pink flowers on 4 foot mounded
plants, Zone 6.
rupicola - A dwarf with small, dark green leaves that
turn purple in winter. The dark purple flowers have
yellow stamens and are borne in clusters. A
protected planting location is suggested, Zone 6.
'Sassy' - A vigorous plant producing pink flowers, Zone
5.
'Sapporo' - Large white flowers have dark purple
blotches, Zone 6.
'Scarlet Romance' - Bright red flowers, Zone 5.
'Scarlet Wonder Dwarf' - A two foot tall dwarf, forming

protection from winter winds. The flowers buds are

'Wendy Lyn' - The red buds open to star-shaped, white
flowers each edged with red, Zone 5.
'Westbury' - (Dexter Hybrid) - Large, pink flowers are
produced on a wide plant, Zone 6.
'Weston' - Pink flowers are produced on compact plants,
Zone 5.
'Weston's Crescendo' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - Large leaves
and yellowish pink to pink flowers are produced on a
compact plant, Zone 5.
'Weston's Mayflower' - A ten year old plant will be 3
feet wide and 2 feet high. The pink flowers are
borne in small groups. Grows well in sun or shade,
Zone 5.
'Weston's Pink Diamond' - (Mezitt Hybrid) - The double,
