Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Comments: Douglas Fir prefers a sunny location with a
moist soil. Cold hardiness and other traits can vary
depending on the seed source. The soft, bluish-green
needles on a tall, narrow spire (Vis. 2) provide a dominant
landscape feature.
Cultivars:
'Carnefix Weeping' - A weeping selection with a
variable shape.
'Compacta' - This name probably applies to several plants
with a more compact form.
'Fastigiata' - A cultivar with ascending branches.
'Fletcheri' - A dwarf, spreading form becoming wider than
high.
'Fretzii' ('Frestsii')- A dense plant becoming a small,
conical tree with ascending thick but short shoots.
var. glauca - Trees with bluish foliage but foliage
color can vary. Also somewhat narrower and slower
growing than the species.
'Glauca Pendula' - A weeping tree with bluish foliage.
'Graceful Grace' - A narrow plant with drooping branches
and long, bluish needles.
'Hess Select Blue' - A pyramidal tree with bluish
foliage.
'Hillside Yellow' - Yellow foliage.
'Little Jon' - A pyramidal, dwarf cultivar.
'Loggerhead' - A dense, low, spreading dwarf.
'Nana' - A dwarf, spreading plant.
'Pendula' - A spreading, slow-growing, (Vis. 1) weeping
tree.
'Pumila' - An upright shrub that will be slightly taller
than it is wide.
'Skyline' - This vigorous (Vis. 3) tree has unusual
snake-like branches and bluish foliage.
