11/12/99
Penstemon digitalis--White Penstemon
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 7
Height: 48 in Spread: 24 in
Type: herbaceous perennial
Flowers: Pink, white
Comments: This penstemon flowers in early summer. Provide
a warm, sunny growing area with well-drained soil. Avoid
planting them in clay although partial shade will not be a
problem. Flowering is best during cool weather. Remove
spent flower spikes as they fade so that additional
flowers will be produced.
Propagation: Propagation is by seed, division or cuttings.
Take softwood cuttings from non-flowering side shoots.
The seed germinates in two to three weeks at temperatures
between 65 and 75 degrees. Division should be done in the
spring.
Cultivars:
'Evelyn' - Bright pink flowers.
'Husker Red' - A University of Nebraska introduction
with reddish leaves and stems and white flowers
tinted pink (Vis. 1).
