11/12/99
Parthenocissus quinquefolia--Virginia Creeper
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9
Height: 50 ft Spread: 50 ft Form: irregular
Type: deciduous vine
Comments: This vine (Vis. 1) can easily reach a height or
spread of 30 feet or more. The leaves are reddish as they
emerge then become green. The fall color (Vis. 2) is bright
red. The plant forms a network of stems that cement
themselves to structures. When the vine is removed it will
leave a residue on buildings. The insignificant flowers are
followed by blue fruit that are at least noticeable if not
ornamental.
Cultivars:
'Engelmanni' - Smaller leaves and better clinging
characteristics than the species.
'Monham' (Star Showers TM) - The leaves have white
variegations.
'Variegata' - A less vigorous vine than the species,
leaves marked with yellow and white then developing a
pink and red fall color.
