Morus alba--White Mulberry
Hardiness Zones: 4 to 8
Height: 45 ft Spread: 45 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous tree
Annual Growth Rate: more than 18 inches
Comments: White Mulberry is a fast-growing tree that
produces fruits eaten by birds, hopefully before they
cause litter problems. As with other fast-growing trees,
it is weak wooded. The species is seldom planted,
however, the cultivars are used in landscapes for their
form. The tree tolerates salt, drought and urban
conditions.
Cultivars:
'Chaparral' - A fruitless, weeping form (Vis. 1) reaching
a height of 12 feet and a slightly larger spread.
'Pendula' - A weeping form reaching a height and spread
of 20 feet. White to purple fruit are produced in
summer.
var. tatarica - Smaller leaves and fruit, good cold
tolerance.
'Teas' - Cultivar grown for its edible fruit.
