Comments: The species is seldom used in landscapes,
however, the plant has been used in breeding programs.

Cultivars: Most of the cultivars listed here are hybrids
involving crosses with M. liliiflora and M. stellata.
'Ann' - A rounded, 8-foot, small tree or large shrub
bearing reddish purple flowers in the spring.
'Betty' - A 10-foot plant bearing flowers (Vis. 2) that
are purple on the outside and white on the inside.
'Fenicchia Hybrid' - Small trees with a height and width
of 15 feet. The large flowers are purplish-red.
'Fireglow' - Pink flowers are produced on plants 30
feet tall.
'Forest Pink' - Clear pink, bowl-shaped flowers.
'Galaxy' - A hybrid of M. liliiflora and M. sprengeri
'Diva'. It reaches a height of about 30 feet with a
spread of 15 feet. The flowers (Vis. 3) are reddish
purple. The tree naturally develops a strong central
leader.
'Jane' - A rounded, 10-foot tall plant with reddish-
purple flowers.
'Nigra' - A plant 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide produces
flowers that are purplish-red on the outside and pink
inside (Vis. 1).
'Pinkie' - A slightly larger hybrid reaching a height
of 15 feet. The reddish-purple flowers fade to pink
as they develop. The inside of the flowers are
white.
'Randy' - The outside of the flower is reddish-purple
and white on the inside.
'Ricki' - Ten-foot tall plants produce purple flowers
that are pale on the inside.
'Royal Crown' - Gresham hybrid with reddish flowers.
'Spectrum' - The purple to pink flowers are produced on
plants 25 feet tall.
'Susan' - An upright, spreading tree or large shrub
producing 5-inch, reddish purple flowers (Vis. 4).
