Ornamental Plants plus Version 3.0 - 00000782
11/12/99
Iris foetidissima--Gladwyn (Gladwin) Iris
Hardiness Zones: 5 to 9
Height: 18 in Spread: 24 in
Type: herbaceous evergreen perennial
Flowers: Lilac
Comments: Gladwyn Iris is native to Europe and North
Africa and is unusual in that the fruit and not the
flowers are the primary ornamental trait. The flowers are
followed by seed capsules that open to reveal the
ornamental, orange seeds. The stems of seeds can be used
in arrangements and decorations but should not be left in
the garden too long or they will deteriorate. The
botanical name refers to the malodorous smell of the
flowers. Grow the plant in partial shade in well-drained
to dry soil. The leaves are dark green and evergreen.
Propagation: Propagate by division.
