Iberis sempervirens--Evergreen Candytuft

Hardiness Zones: 4 to 9
Height: 6 in Spread: 15 in
Type: woody evergreen perennial
Flowers: White

Comments: The Iberis are small shrubs that spread into
mats (Vis. 1) bearing dark green foliage and white flowers
(Vis. 2). These broad-leaved evergreens may be used in rock
gardens, borders or as edging or ground cover plants. They
give best growth in full sun and a moderately rich, moist
soil. A protected site is recommended as the foliage may
windburn in winter. Iberis are not long lived in shade or
in wet soil. Shear the plants after flowering to make
them grow more compactly.

Propagation: Propagation is by seed, softwood cuttings,
and division. Softwood cuttings are taken in summer and
division is done in fall. The seed germinates in 2 to 3
weeks at 65 to 70 degrees but cultivars may not come true
to type.

Cultivars:
'Alexander's White' - A low-growing, early-blooming
plant.
'Little Gem' - A dwarf only 6 inches tall and 15 inches
wide (Vis. 3).
'October Glory' - An 8-inch tall cultivar that blooms
in both spring and fall.
'Purity' - Plants 8 inches tall produce white flowers
in the spring.
'Snowflake' - Shorter habit than the species.
'Summer Snow' - Large clusters of white flowers.
