Hydrangea quercifolia--Oak-Leaved Hydrangea

Hardiness Zones: 5 to 9
Height: 6 ft Spread: 8 ft Form: irregular spreading
Type: deciduous shrub
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches
Flowers: White

Comments: Oak-leaved Hydrangea has leaves shaped like oak
leaves. The plant grows in sun or shade and prefers a
rich, moist soil. It may not be as hardy as other
hydrangeas. The top usually dies back during the winter
and it needs shelter from high winds. Oak-leaved
Hydrangea transplants easily and has a very coarse texture
and good red fall color (Vis. 5). The hairy young twigs are
reddish. The flowers (Vis. 6), produced in midsummer in
panicles, are at first white, then fade to pink and then
tan.

Cultivars:
'Alice' - A vigorous cultivar producing 12-inch
clusters of white flowers.
'Harmony' - Large clusters of white flowers.
'Pee Wee' - A dwarf, 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide.
'Sikes Dwarf' - A dwarf, about 4 feet tall (Vis. 4).
'Snow Queen' - Pure white flowers (Vis. 1) open in early
July then gradually turn pink. The leaves turn deep
red (Vis. 2) in the fall.
'Snowflake' - The flowers (Vis. 3) open white but the
sepals are dark pink.
