Hydrangea arborescens--Smooth Hydrangea
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9
Height: 5 ft Spread: 5 ft Form: rounded
Type: deciduous shrub
Annual Growth Rate: more than 18 inches
Flowers: White
Comments: Smooth Hydrangea grows in sun or shade and
prefers rich, porous, moist soil. Transplanting is fairly
easy and the growth rate is rapid. The plant often dies
back during the winter, and, if it's not pruned in early
spring, the flower clusters become small. The white
flowers (Vis. 2) are produced in midsummer and are green at
first. Old flowers turn brown and persist on the plant for
some time. The canes tend to be fairly weak.
Cultivars:
'Annabelle' - An improved selection with (Vis. 1) white
flowers. This cultivar grows well in shade.
'Grandiflora' - Large, pure white flowers produced
throughout the summer.
ssp. radiata - Dark green leaves have white undersides.
