Hippeastrum--Amaryllis
Type: house plant
Comments: Amaryllis produces spectacular flowers (Vis. 1) on
tall stalks during the winter and summer. Actively growing
plants need full sun when growing indoors. When outdoors
in summer, provide the plants with partial shade. Water
actively growing plants when the soil surface becomes dry
and use a house plant fertilizer according to label
directions. Ideal temperatures are 70 degrees during the
day and 60 degrees at night. Plant in a pot two inches
larger than the bulb and put only the bottom 1/2 to 2/3 of
the bulb in the soil. Water sparingly until the plant is
rooted, then water normally. Keep the bulb in low light
until growth starts, then gradually provide normal light.
Well grown plants bloom outdoors during the summer.
Propagation: The easiest propagation method is separating
the bulblets during repotting.
