Ornamental Plants plus Version 3.0 - 00000708
11/12/99
Heliopsis helianthoides--Sunflower Heliopsis
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9
Height: 4 ft Spread: 4 ft
Type: herbaceous perennial
Flowers: Orange
Comments: Heliopsis grows best in full sun and when given
regular watering. The plant is easy to grow and is a good
source of cut flowers. Frequent cutting will help
eliminate the self-seeded volunteer plants that can become
weeds. These large, mounded plants (Vis. 3) require
adequate growing space.
Propagation: Propagation is by division, cuttings or seed.
The seed germinates in 10 to 15 days at 70 degrees. Seed
grown plants may exhibit a fair amount of variability.
Cuttings should be taken in summer from non-flowering
shoots.
Cultivars:
'Ballerina' - Semi-double, (Vis. 1) golden-yellow
flowers.
'Golden Plume' - Double yellow flowers are 2 inches in
diameter.
'Karat' - Large, yellow flowers on plants 4 feet tall.
'Summer Sun' - Yellow, 2-inch flowers (Vis. 2) on plants
only 30 inches tall.
