Fritillaria imperialis--Crown Imperial

Height: 36 in Spacing: 12 in
Type: hardy bulb
Flowers: Orange (Vis. 1), red, yellow

Comments: The drooping, bell-shaped (Vis. 2) flowers of
Crown Imperial are borne in a circle on top of a tall stem.
The tuft of leaves protruding above the flowers provides the
illusion of a crown. Provide a sunny growing area with a
well-drained loam. The bulbs have an unpleasant odor and
are sometimes suggested for inter-planting with other
bulbs to repel rodents. A winter mulch is suggested.
Remove faded flowers to prevent seed formation. Once
established they should not be disturbed. Plant the bulbs
4 to 5 inches deep and angle them slightly sideways to
keep water from collecting in the depression at the top of
the bulb.

Propagation: Divide dormant bulbs in autumn and replant
immediately. The bulbs produce offshoots which can be
used for propagation.
