Fothergilla gardenii--Dwarf Fothergilla

Hardiness Zones: 5 to 8
Height: 3 ft Spread: 3 ft Form: (Vis. 3) rounded
Type: deciduous shrub
Annual Growth Rate: less than 12 inches
Flowers: White

Comments: The white flowers (Vis. 4) are 1 1/2 inches long,
1 inch wide and have no petals. The parts that look like
petals are actually the stamens. The flowers are borne in
the spring before the leaves. The plant likes a cool, moist
root zone and a sandy loam. Little pruning is needed
other than an occasional thinning of the older branches.
The fall color is generally red and yellow. Branches may
be layered in the autumn.

Cultivars:
'Blue Mist' - The fragrant white flowers are followed
by blue green foliage that turns brilliant colors in
the fall (Vis. 1).
'Mt. Airy' - A vigorous shrub that can reach 5 feet.
It produces many white flowers (Vis. 2) and produces
brilliant fall color.
