Eryngium giganteum--Giant Sea Holly
Hardiness Zones: 6 to 8
Height: 4 ft Spread: 2 ft
Type: herbaceous perennial or biennial
Flowers: Blue
Comments: Based on catalog and other descriptions, this
plant appears to provide considerable variability. The
foliage can range from intense blue to green. The height
listed is a compromise with heights ranging from 2- to 6-
feet listed in various resources. Giant Sea Holly is not
reliably hardy and so should be treated as a biennial. It
will often self-seed thereby giving the appearance of
being perennial. Large plants will need to be staked to
prevent wind damage. Otherwise, provide a well-drained
soil and a sunny growing area. The plant will tolerate
dry conditions. The flowers can be dried for use in
arrangements. The foliage is variegated with white.
Propagation: Propagate by seed, division or root cuttings.
Seed should be planted in late summer for flowering the
following year. Division or root cuttings can only be
done on plants that persist. If tried it should be done
in the spring.
