Dictamnus albus--Gas Plant
Hardiness Zones: 3 to 8
Height: 4 ft Spread: 2 ft
Type: herbaceous perennial
Flowers: White
Comments: Gas Plant produces fragrant flowers (Vis. 1) and
foliage. The name Gas Plant refers to the gases the plant
gives off. These gases can sometimes be ignited. The plant
is long-lived and is not easily transplanted once it has
become established. Seed pods can be used for winter
decoration. The plant grows best in full sun or partial
shade and in a well-drained soil. Touching the plant may
result in dermatitis.
Propagation: Propagation is by root cuttings or seed.
Plant seed outdoors in the fall, however it may take 4
years for seed-grown plants to bloom. Root cuttings may
be difficult to do. Make 3 inch long root cuttings then
put them in pots of sandy soil. When root and shoot
formation have occurred, put the plants in the garden.
Cultivars:
'Albiflorus' ('Albus') - White flowers.
'Purpureus' - The flowers are pink with darker veins.
